Sizing 100 kW–2,000 kW Generator Sets for Commercial Buildings, From Boutique Hotels to Campuses

Nov 04, 2026

Commercial buildings cover a wide spread of power needs. A boutique hotel or small office may need 100 kW of backup, a shopping centre or office tower several hundred kilowatts, and a large mixed-use development or hospital campus 2,000 kW or more. MPMC's generator set range, from 9 kVA to 3,750 kVA, covers every one of these bands with open, economic, silent and containerised designs, so building owners and MEP contractors can match each project with the right size and enclosure.

Choosing by Power Band

100 kW to 500 kW: Compact Silent Sets

Smaller buildings typically use canopy-type sets. MPMC's SE economic series offers a cost-optimised option, while the SR rental type and SR2 silent type, with noise reduction of up to 35 dB(A), suit sites near residents, guests and patients. Compact footprints make them easy to place in service yards or car parks.

Engine choices in this band include Perkins, Cummins, Kubota, Yanmar and other partners, so building owners can match the set to local service support, and every model is available with automatic mains changeover for unattended operation.

500 kW to 1,000 kW: High-Output Silent Sets

Mid-size buildings such as hotels, offices and retail centres often choose a single silent set in this band. MPMC's SR2 Series includes 1,000 kVA silent sets built around Perkins engines and Stamford alternators, combining high output with an enclosure designed for urban locations.

1,000 kW to 2,000 kW and Beyond: Containerised and Parallel

Large developments use containerised units, either singly or in parallel. MPMC's Cummins-documented models run from 1,000 kVA on the KTA38-G5 to 2,000 kVA on the QSK60-G4 at 50 Hz, and super-silent SC containers achieve noise levels as low as 83.4 dB(A) at 1 m and 75% load on the MCLS1250 SC.

Parallel systems let a building add capacity in stages as tenants move in, and provide N+1 redundancy so one unit can be serviced while the others stand ready. Motorised breakers from ABB or Schneider and DEIF or DSE synchronising controllers keep switching smooth and automatic. At the upper end of the range, MPMC's containerised two-engine units, from 1,250 kVA to 3,000 kVA with Baudouin, Scania or Perkins engines and Stamford or Leroy-Somer alternators, give large developments a further containerised option.

Built for Life in and Around Buildings

Commercial buildings need backup power that starts automatically and runs quietly. DSE or DEIF controllers handle automatic mains changeover and parallel load sharing, and steady-state frequency stability within ±0.25% with voltage regulation within ±1% protect lifts, building management systems and IT. Fuel tank options of 6, 8, 12 or 24 hours, plus bonded or external tanks, match each building's autonomy requirement.

On a 3 MW commercial building project in New Zealand, MPMC supplied four 750 kVA units powered by Doosan DP222LC engines with Stamford S5L1D-H4 alternators, housed in 20HC super-silent containers rated at 75 dB(A) at 7 m and full load, with DSE8610 load sharing, ABB 1,250 A motorised breakers and 9 kW engine block preheaters for reliable starting.

Every unit is load-tested from 0% to 110% in MPMC's CNAS-accredited test centre, and buildings with solar ambitions can add HBD battery storage to reduce generator set running time and support peak shaving. Commercial and industrial battery storage also provides load support and smooths load fluctuations, so storage and generator sets complement each other.

Containerised and silent units are fabricated with laser cutting, certified welding and C3 to C5 anti-corrosion coating, so enclosures stay presentable in service yards and car parks for years, and remote monitoring options let facility managers check status from the building management office.
