Island-Ready Power: Choosing Diesel Generator Sets for Off-Grid Island Power Station Projects

Nov 05, 2026

An island power station has no neighbouring grid to fall back on. It must start itself, stabilise its own frequency and voltage, resist salt air year after year and keep running between fuel deliveries by sea. MPMC builds containerised generator sets that are engineered for this island-mode duty, from the enclosure coating to the switchgear, and has delivered off-grid power stations from 1.2 MW to 21.6 MW.

Five Features of an Island-Ready Generator Set

1. Corrosion Protection for Salt Air

Coastal sites need more than paint. MPMC sandblasts every frame and applies C3, C4 or C5 anti-corrosion coating to ISO 12944, verified by 500 to 700 hours of salt-spray testing twice a year, with C5 marine-grade protection available for exposed island and offshore locations.

Containerised enclosures shield engines, alternators and switchgear from wind-driven rain and spray, and the NDT-inspected, pressure-tested chassis stay sound through sea transport and installation.

2. Independent Start and Island-Mode Control

Island stations run in island mode with black-start capability. MPMC's high-voltage island-mode system for a Middle East oilfield shows the level of engineering involved: 2,250 kVA Perkins 4016-61TRG3 units in 40HC containers with Leroy-Somer alternators, a dual-start system with air start as primary and electric start as backup, SF6 gas-insulated vacuum circuit breakers, neutral grounding resistors and N+X redundancy.

3. High-Voltage Distribution

Island grids often stretch along coasts. The MCLS2000H(S)-1 delivers 2,000 kVA prime at 11,000 V, enabling direct high-voltage distribution with lower losses over long cable runs.

Steady-state frequency stability within ±0.25% and voltage regulation within ±1% give island consumers grid-quality power, and parallel load sharing through DSE or DEIF AGC controllers keeps the system balanced as demand rises and falls through the day.

4. Renewable and Flexible Fuels

Fuel logistics shape island economics, and many islands are moving to renewable fuel. MPMC's 21.6 MW island power station in Indonesia runs entirely on biodiesel using Cummins KTA50-GS8 engines with Leroy-Somer LSA50.2 L8 alternators, and its 18 MW B35 plant lowers lifecycle CO2 by up to 85% compared with petroleum diesel.

The same containerised platform also runs on natural gas or methanol, and built-in fuel tanks of 6, 8, 12 or 24 hours, with bonded or external options, help islands plan bulk fuel storage around delivery schedules. Copper radiators rated for 50°C ambient keep output steady in tropical heat.

5. Ready for Solar and Storage

Generator sets that can work with storage let islands add solar step by step. MPMC's HBD-A battery storage integrates with the genset array in VSG, grid-forming, black start, PQ and VF modes, and its self-developed SCADA adds remote monitoring with Starlink satellite backup for islands with compact operating teams.

In Kenya, four MPMC hybrid sites each pair 1 MW of PV and at least 1 MWh of DC-coupled storage with diesel generator sets, delivering stable 24/7 power with seamless switching between solar and diesel, an architecture island utilities can adopt in stages.
