A Generator Sets Manufacturer's Guide to 1,500 kW Industrial Backup Power Applications

Nov 03, 2026

The 1,500 kW class is one of the most common sizes for industrial backup power. It covers the critical loads of a medium-sized factory, a processing plant, a cold store or a hospital wing in a single generator set, or forms the building block of a larger parallel system. MPMC manufactures generator sets across this class on its containerised platform, with a choice of engine brands, prime or standby ratings, 50 Hz or 60 Hz output and controls that connect cleanly to the plant's switchgear.

Prime or Standby: Reading the Ratings Correctly

Standby Rating for Emergency Backup

A standby rating is the output a set delivers during a mains interruption, while a prime rating is for sets that run for long hours at variable load. In MPMC's Cummins-documented line-up, the MCLS1875(S)-1 on a QSK60-G7 engine delivers 1,500 kW prime at 50 Hz, and the 60 Hz MCLS1500(S)-2 on a KTA50-G9 engine delivers 1,500 kW standby. Industrial buyers can therefore match the set precisely to whether it will cover outages or run daily for peak shaving.

Engine Choices Beyond Cummins

The same containerised platform is built with Perkins, MTU, Baudouin, Scania, SDEC and other engines, paired with Stamford or Leroy-Somer alternators. MPMC has been the largest G-OEM by volume in China for Perkins and Stamford in recent years, so plants can select the engine family their maintenance teams and local service partners already support.

Two 1,500 kVA units in parallel are a popular way to reach 2.4 MW with built-in redundancy, as on MPMC's 3 MW hospital backup project in China, while a single 1,875 kVA unit keeps the footprint compact where space is tight.

Integrating a 1,500 kW Set Into the Plant

Automatic Changeover and Parallel Operation

For emergency backup, automatic mains changeover (AMF) control through DSE or DEIF controllers starts the set and transfers the load without operator action. Where a plant wants its backup sets to earn their keep, they can run in parallel with the mains for peak shaving, as on MPMC's 4.2 MW factory expansion in the UAE, where MTU 16V4000G63 engines with Stamford PI734G alternators use DSE8620 controllers, an ABB 3,200 A air circuit breaker and 50°C radiators driven by electric motors.

Power Quality for Sensitive Processes

Steady-state frequency stability within ±0.25% and voltage regulation within ±1% protect variable-speed drives, PLCs and process electronics. One-step load acceptance in line with ISO 8528-5 restores critical loads quickly, and multiple sets synchronise with ABB or Schneider motorised breakers for N+1 redundancy.

For plants that also run large motors, MPMC's engineers check starting currents and step loads during design, so the selected set accepts each load block without disturbing the processes already running.

Two-Engine Generator Sets With Battery Support

MPMC's containerised platform offers a further route through the 1,500 kW class. Alongside single-engine units from 800 kVA to 3,750 kVA, its two-engine containerised generator sets cover 1,250 kVA to 3,000 kVA with Baudouin, Scania or Perkins engines and Stamford or Leroy-Somer alternators, and four-engine Scania units are available at 1,600 kVA. Paired with MPMC's commercial and industrial battery storage, which provides peak shaving, load support and smoothing of load fluctuations, generation and storage complement each other across the plant's daily load profile.

Every set is load-tested at 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% and 110% in MPMC's CNAS-accredited test centre, including a constant-temperature room that simulates 40°C or 50°C ambient. Built-in fuel tanks of 6, 8, 12 or 24 hours, with bonded or external options, set the backup autonomy, and super-silent SC containers suit plants close to offices or residential areas. Generator sets carry a 1-year or 1,000-hour warranty, with engines, alternators and controllers supported through their manufacturers' global service networks.
