Generator Sets for Utility Power Station Projects: How MPMC Supports Utilities From Fuel Strategy to Commissioning

Oct 30, 2026

Utilities building or expanding power stations look for generating equipment that delivers firm capacity, fits their fuel strategy, connects cleanly to their network and can grow with demand. MPMC's containerised generator set platform is built around exactly these needs. It covers single-engine units from 800 kVA to 3,750 kVA, twin-engine units from 1,250 kVA to 3,000 kVA and four-engine 1,600 kVA units, and has powered utility-scale stations from 1.2 MW to 21.6 MW in Africa and Asia.

Matching the Station to the Utility's Role

Base Load, Island Grids and Capacity Support

Island and off-grid utilities rely on generator sets for continuous base load, so MPMC designs these stations to ISO 8528 continuous duty with multi-unit parallel operation, N+X redundancy and independent black-start capability. Grid-connected utilities often need capacity that supports the network at peak times; MPMC units can run in parallel with the mains for peak shaving and backup, as demonstrated on a 4.2 MW MTU-powered factory expansion in the UAE.

Cooling is optimised for ambient temperatures of 50°C and above, enclosures are rated to ISO 12944 C4 or C5 for coastal and tropical sites, and steady-state frequency stability within ±0.25% with voltage regulation within ±1% keeps power quality within utility expectations.

Modular Growth in Step With Demand

Because every unit is a self-contained, factory-tested container, a utility can commission a first phase quickly and add units as demand grows, using the same controls, spares and operating procedures across the whole station. MPMC's 18 MW plant in Indonesia, for example, is built from 18 identical 1 MW containerised units.

Standardised containers also simplify spare-parts stocking and operator training, because every unit in the station shares the same layout, controller and maintenance schedule. Units ship by sea in container formats and arrive ready for rapid installation, shortening the time from contract to first power.

A Fuel Strategy for Every Utility

The same containerised platform runs on diesel, natural gas, methanol or biofuel at B35 and above, letting each utility select the fuel that matches local supply and carbon policy. Natural gas units reach electrical efficiency of at least 38% and total energy utilisation of 80% or more where heat can be recovered. Biodiesel stations deliver the largest carbon reduction: MPMC's 18 MW plant in Indonesia runs on B35, lowering lifecycle CO2 by up to 85% compared with petroleum diesel and complying with RED II and RFS standards, while a 21.6 MW island power station in Indonesia runs entirely on biodiesel.

Grid Connection and Hybrid Integration

For long transmission distances, the MCLS2000H(S)-1 delivers 2,000 kVA prime at 11,000 V, and MPMC has engineered high-voltage island-mode systems with SF6 gas-insulated vacuum circuit breakers and neutral grounding resistors. Utilities adding solar can integrate HBD-A battery storage in VSG, grid-forming, PQ or VF mode. In Kenya, four MPMC hybrid sites each combine 1 MW of PV, 1 MWh of DC-coupled storage and diesel generator sets, delivering stable 24/7 power with seamless solar-diesel switching.

Every project follows MPMC's end-to-end scope of design consultation, product customisation, CNAS-accredited factory testing, logistics and commissioning, and the 18 MW Indonesian plant was deployed rapidly on arrival and has operated stably in a tropical environment.

For hybrid stations, MPMC's self-developed SCADA provides real-time remote monitoring and control, automated reports, ten years of data retention and Starlink satellite backup communication, allowing utility control rooms to supervise remote plants with a compact local team.
