Gas generation enters data centre planning for reasons diesel cannot address: lower emissions at the point of use, a fuel already delivered by pipeline in many locations, and in some jurisdictions the permitting route that allows a facility to be built where it is wanted. It also introduces a dependency diesel does not have, because the fuel arrives through infrastructure rather than in a tank. MPMC POWERTECH CORP., established in 2008 and headquartered in Shanghai Pudong, lists natural gas among four fuel platforms on a common containerised range.
MPMC gas generator setThree supply parameters govern whether a gas scheme is viable, and all three sit upstream of model selection. Supply pressure at the connection point determines whether a gas train and compression are required. Gas composition, expressed through methane number and calorific value, affects achievable output and knock margin. Supply continuity determines whether a backup fuel or a dual-fuel arrangement is needed at all.
For a data centre the third is the one that shapes the resilience design. A pipeline interruption is a different event from a grid outage, and the facility's availability case has to account for both rather than assuming they are independent.
MPMC's published position for natural gas is electrical efficiency of at least 38% and total energy utilisation efficiency of at least 80%. The gap between those two numbers is heat, and it becomes useful only if the site can absorb it.
That distinction matters for a data centre in particular. Total utilisation of 80% assumes recovered heat is put to work, which is achievable where absorption cooling or a district heat offtake exists and is not where neither does. The business case should be built on the figure that applies to the facility as designed rather than on the headline total.

Availability varies by rating and region, so the fuel platform should be confirmed against the specific output required rather than assumed to extend across the whole range.
Gas engines behave differently from diesel in ways that affect a data centre design directly. Load acceptance is generally slower, because the fuel-air mixture cannot be enriched as abruptly, so a facility with large step loads may need a larger set, a storage buffer or a different sequencing strategy than the diesel equivalent would require.
Where storage covers the transient, MPMC lists an HBD-R series positioned as a generator set partner with millisecond-level transient load smoothing, from the HBD-30-60 at 30 kW with 61.44 kWh to the HBD-610-610 at 610 kW with 610.6 kWh, compatible with DSE, ComAp, DEIF, Woodward, Smartgen and CAT EMCP controllers. That combination is one recognised route to meeting a step-load requirement on a gas platform.
MPMC gas generator setRecovering heat usefully requires a demand that sits near the generation and coincides with it in time. A data centre already rejects substantial heat of its own, so the question is whether an absorption cooling arrangement or an external offtake can make use of the engine's recovered heat rather than adding to the rejection load.
That analysis belongs in the feasibility work rather than in detailed design, because it determines which of the two published efficiency figures the business case should use and whether the site layout needs to accommodate a heat recovery circuit at all.
MPMC's Haimen facility in Jiangsu is described as a 22,000 m² workshop with a 4,000 m² office area and a CNAS-accredited testing centre, listed as specialising in continuous operation power stations across diesel, biodiesel, natural gas and methanol. A second base at Yangzhong is listed as producing containerised intelligent diesel, gas and methanol generator sets.
Product compliance listed includes CE, TUV, SGS, SABER, BV, SONCAP, EAC and UL depending on model and market, with company certification including ISO 9001:2015, ISO 45001 and ISO 14001. Gas installations frequently attract additional local approvals covering the gas train and safety devices, so the destination requirements should be confirmed separately from the generator documentation.
A gas installation carries a service regime and a safety case that differ from diesel. Spark plugs and ignition components introduce items diesel does not have, oil intervals differ, and the installation adds gas detection, ventilation and shutdown provisions to the scope.
For a data centre those provisions interact with the building fire strategy and the emergency response plan, so they belong in the design conversation early rather than in commissioning. MPMC lists commissioning support within its direct-project scope alongside design consultation, product customisation, factory testing and logistics, with remote diagnostics and on-site engineers dispatched for complex cases.
